witch-ways communications

Crafting magic on the internet since 1994.

Welcome! If you're new to the witch-ways experience, don't worry. All you need to know is that I've been online and involved with technology, website development and training in the nonprofit world since 1994.* (I also work with women in small businesses to give them a "helping hand".)

I've got a lot of projects on the go, and most are listed on the sidebar. Contact info's also on the sidebar aussi.

I'm not into posting rates, but if you're interested in learning more about technology and nonprofits, drop me a line. I'd love to work with you!

(Other geek points: I've had a computer since 1980 and attended computer camp to learn Basic and Logo. Oh, how I miss the turtle.)

IOWIIWFY

I joined Facebook a few months ago after a couple of friends asked me to. At first, I had resisted because I thought it would be too time consuming and, quite frankly, I am the Queen of "Not Enough Hours in the Day But I'll Fit It In" and I was trying to move away from that. As well, I had this site, which I don't use as much as I'd like, and I was worried that I would start neglecting it because it was just easier to throw electric sheep at people.

Yesterday, a friend (oh, you know who you are, giggle) announced that he would be taking down his Facebook page because it was just getting to be too much. Another friend (who also knows who she is, double giggle), commiserating, noted that "perhaps we just aren't the Facebook generation." (Both of these people are younger than me, by the by, which also made me giggle. Or perhaps it's the lack of sleep. Just sayin'.)

Now, I am big on "It Only Works If It Works For You" when it comes to technology. Nothing bothers me more than seeing money and time wasted because someone was talked into the new gadget/widget that really does nothing for anyone. And so, although I am sad to see this person go, I completely understand and support the decision (didn't see that coming from me, didya?) because he's being honest; it no longer works for him.

And, in the spirit of IOWIIWFY, I've decided to list my top five reasons why Facebook works for me.

  1. Friends! It's been great to reconnect with people I've lost touch with. And not only people who have moved; I've used to reconnect with a few people in Calgary that I've lost touch with when we all did our respective agency shuffles.

  2. It's a great way to keep up on what's going on in people's lives without actually having the pressure of interacting. I can post as much (or as little) as I would like, and my friends have the option of replying (or not) as time and interest allow.

  3. I'm actually more inclined to write, and to take pictures, just knowing that I have a little built-in audience.

  4. There are a lot of organizations and movements using Facebook to connect and share information. I've learned a lot about the fight of the Lubicon Cree, for example, just by joining their group. And the Great Canadian Wish List was an interesting experiment to be involved in, even it was frustrating at the time.

  5. Electric sheep. Now I know why the androids dream of them.

I (L) the Sound of Geeker Joy...

I've managed to screen capture my link on Facebook about the new CBC Facebook policies that were posted to their blog, which I (of course) read in my RSS feed... and now I'm posting it to my blog....

I'll just go squee quietly in the corner now. :-)

Perhaps I'll Just Stick to Patchouli

I was looking for recommendations for ritual oil, but when I googled "feminist + witch + oil" my entry on the Yes Men appeared in 6th place. Not quite what I was looking for, but thanks.

This still won't matter to those who think "default" is a valid username

Via Slashdot:

Each day around lunch time, Sam Peterson would drive to the Union Street Cafe, park his car and--without actually entering the coffee shop--check his e-mail and surf the Net. His ritual raised the suspicions of Police Chief Andrew Milanowski, who approached him and asked what he was doing. Peterson, probably not realizing that his actions constituted a crime, freely admitted what he was doing. Read more...

There is at least one unsecure wireless network on my list this morning, and I'm sure there's a lot in the neighbourhood. There are ones in my parent's neighbourhood as well, and I know of a few that show up when I work downtown. They show up when I log in, right away. I wonder how many people use them daily in this way, and I wonder if Canada's got similar cases on the way.
