witch-ways communications

Crafting magic on the internet since 1994.

Welcome! If you're new to the witch-ways experience, don't worry. All you need to know is that I've been online and involved with technology, website development and training in the nonprofit world since 1994.* (I also work with women in small businesses to give them a "helping hand".)

I've got a lot of projects on the go, and most are listed on the sidebar. Contact info's also on the sidebar aussi.

I'm not into posting rates, but if you're interested in learning more about technology and nonprofits, drop me a line. I'd love to work with you!

(Other geek points: I've had a computer since 1980 and attended computer camp to learn Basic and Logo. Oh, how I miss the turtle.)

OK, so it's been a while...

... but at least I still remembered my password!

Yes, life got busy for a while. Anyone who knows me knows what's been happening. The rest of you can make something up - use your imaginations!

My jonesing for website development is currently being satisfied at www.bowcliffseniors.org, where I've been the Executive Director since last October. I've also become addicted to Facebook along with half of my former high school. (Mostly they find me through my sister, who was way more social than I was during that period in our lives.)

I'm starting my next-to-last class at MRC tonight, which should take up even more of my time, which has become even more constrained since the single-mom thing started in March.

Oh, and I'm in the news today:

Anders' absence angers seniors

This 'Bart' never punished

And to think moving from the violence against women sector to the seniors sector would be less political!

Perhaps I'll Just Stick to Patchouli

I was looking for recommendations for ritual oil, but when I googled "feminist + witch + oil" my entry on the Yes Men appeared in 6th place. Not quite what I was looking for, but thanks.

Clean Up on Post #31

I'm cleaning up and tagging/re-tagging a number of posts over the next couple of days, and I'm not sure what republishing these will do to my feeds (including FaceBook), so I apologize in advance if things go a little wonky.

(I'm also working on a new site design, so I'll start apologizing for anything caused by that now.)

Death and, er, you know

Yes, it's that time of year again... time to haul out the shoebox and start sorting through mountains of paper in the quest to discover how much I spent on office supplies in 2006. You would think the child of two people who do this for a living would have a better organizing system.

(Although, to my credit, everything went into the same shoebox this year.)

It's nice to (almost?) complete something

I've completed the RESOLVE Alberta site - pending any changes from a couple of outstanding requests for information. I really enjoyed this site redesign because it involved making taking elements of the two other RESOLVE sites (RESOLVE Manitoba and RESOLVE Saskatchewan) and bringing them together to create a cohesive site design. It's a much different approach from, say, Sunrise, where the struggle was to get information for the site; here, I spent more time re-arranging existing information into a more user-friendly format while adding new information as it presented itself. Overall, a very fun project, and I was glad I had the chance to do it.

Happy HoHo

I'm on "holidays" from December 23 - January 5, but will be back hard at work on January 8.

*holidays = chaotic time with family and friends, with hopefully some time to sleep somewhere along the way

Going Live in 5, 4, 3...

The RESOLVE Alberta redesign is finally up. Well, the first part, anyway. Yes, the files keep disappearing, but I've found a way to get around that now. (Just too stubborn to give up.) I'm glad a lot of the projects are up as well, including one of mine (the AGEA project that I helped write). Others will be appearing as they come into my inbox.

This is not an invitation to break into my house (again!!)...

From the rpg.net motivational poster thread - www.rpg.netSo, when I went to purchase our new renters' insurance package a couple of weeks ago, I decided to ask about the coverage on my laptop. (I'm taking it out of the house a lot more and would hate to not be covered.)

Well, interesting fact: my insurance company won't insure any of my equipment (laptop, printer, etc.) because I'm a web designer. They don't want to deal with the liability of what is posted on the web. Although I was able to get renters' insurance through them, I have to go through another company for my laptop/etc. Sigh.

I asked how they were addressing liability issues with kids and blogs/myspace, but they had no answers. Personally, I'd be more worried about kids posting than web designers, but I guess no one's looked at this yet.

The moral of the story? Never assume anything. Mostly it makes an ass out of you. :-)

Holi-days... Cele-brate...

I'm "on holidays" from July 21-August 21 (wow, a whole month!) but can be reached by email.

(Ok, let's be honest - I'll be working on my holidays, just at other people's kitchen tables.)

Well, yesterday's class has resulted in today's redesign of No Quarter. Mike had a lot of good ideas to add, including changing the background color from grey to black. Does that mean that black is now the new black?

The family that codes together...

It's interesting. Once people heard (and got over the initial shock) that I will no longe be at VIEC, they've been coming out of the woodwork to ask me to take on all sorts of projects.

The latest? StephanieLarosiliere.com, my sister's brand-spanking new site. I had no idea that grey was the new black.

Just a quick note that I am no longer with the Violence Information & Education Centre. I'm keeping the link to the website active for the moment, as it is my redesign, but if they start making changes to the site I will remove the link.

I'll be at Celebrating Mother this weekend - come down and check it out! (This event has been the work of Pier at Weaving Sound, along with many talented performers and volunteers.)

How did it get to be Friday?

  • Got the background on Weaving Sound to work! No more annoying white bar to contend with.

  • VIEC got a whole bunch of new forms and pdf's to play with. (The Valentines Fundraiser forms were a lifesaver, as we sold 64 bags and I think I received 3 phone calls; the rest came online!) I'm still struggling with the new library page redesign as I dream about where we could get the money to put the catalogue online.

Happy Web Tricks

If you get a moment, check out the test calender on Sunrise's events page. If I like the system, I may be using it for VIEC soon.....

This Week's Project(s)

Braun Family Website: Adding information (as it appears in my inbox) on my sister's upcoming wedding. Nice website they have for it, too, with guestbook and links to registries. Amazed my grandmother hasn't posted to the site yet; guess she must be busy with online Scrabble on her new computer.

Sunrise Community Link: Happier with the template now, but a lot more to go, coding-wise. *Love* the floating box on the top.

Violence Information & Education Centre: Tracy Lynn's got the Wise at Work logo coming, I hope, and there's always the new library pages redesign.

If I find the time, I'm also hoping to complete two articles for a January 15 deadline. Not free time, mind you, just time that only has two or three things booked (as opposed to the usual five or six).
