Here’s the text of my letter. Hope you sent yours! -T.

Prime Minister Designate Harper,

As you begin your term in office, I ask that you remember
the values that Canadians such as myself subscribe to.
These include:

PEACE – no Star Wars, no racial profiling, support for
real solutions to the problems in the Middle East and no
following the warmongering agenda of other countries

UNIVERSAL PUBLIC HEALTHCARE – no private-for-profit
clinics and no cuts to services by deeming them “non-
essential”

A LIVING WAGE and STRONG SOCIAL PROGRAMS – no corporate
welfare and tax cuts for the rich, no cuts to social
programs, and increased assistance for agencies working
with women and children fleeing abusive homes

EQUAL HUMAN RIGHTS FOR ALL BASED ON THE STIPULATIONS OF
THE CHARTER – no discrimination based on sexual
orientation, gender, race or religion

EQUALITY OF EDUCATION – support for students, including a
new federal loan system that enables students to graduate
without an insurmountable debt load

KEEP A WOMAN’S RIGHT TO CHOOSE – keep abortion legal and
accessible in Canada for all women

MAKE EVERY VOTE COUNT – support change in our electoral
system by endorsing and passing a system of proportional
representation

I ask that you and your government commit to an agenda of
peace and equality for all Canadians, and continue the
legacy of Canadians who have worked to make this a country
to be proud of.

Passing this on (with permission) from my inbox. -T.

Women and Politics

Sexism is keeping women from politics, according to Shelia Copps this morning. In case you were thinking she was wrong, I’d like to thank Peter McKay for illustrating the point so clearly this morning. And I’m not buying his explanation that this is an “old saying”, ’cause “barefoot and pregnant in the kitchen” is just as old *and* just as sexist.

Is it Monday yet?

Canada Votes…

…well, some of Canada.

I can’t believe how many people I’ve talked to since the election was called that aren’t voting.

Rick Mercer referred to people who weren’t voting as lazy or stunned. I think there’s more of the latter going on. People just don’t seem to know what to make of the election, the parties, the candidates, or the shift from left to right. (What happened to telling ourselves we’re not like the Americans *and* that we don’t want to be?)

Of course, being in the heart of Conservative country, I’d like to think that things are better elsewhere. (Hey, a girl can dream!) Maybe the NDP will get enough power to push for propotional representation? Or maybe enought to just hold back the tide?

Guess we’ll see on Monday night just what the few who voted (and I’m predicting one of the lowest, if not the lowest, voter turnout in Canadian history) thought we needed in this country. I’ll be watching Mercer regardless of the outcome because, if we need anything now, we need a good reason to laugh.
